Aaron Rodgers, quarterback, Green Bay Packers
by Kenny Karst
If you were rooting for a former Cal Bears quarterback to win last Saturday’s NFC divisional playoff game, you had a 100% chance of victory. “Bear versus Bear” featured Cal Class of 2004's Aaron Rodgers (12) for the host Green Bay Packers, versus Cal Class of 2015's Jared Goff of the visiting Los Angeles Rams. With a scant 8,456 socially-distanced fans in attendance, the first at Lambeau Field this entire season, Rodgers drove the Packers to a 32-18 win amid light, Wisconsin snow flurries. Now in his 16th NFL season with Green Bay, Rodgers completed 23 of 36 pass attempts for 296 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while rushing for a third touchdown on the ground. Rodgers was a Northern California junior college transfer from Butte Community College in Oroville, discovered in 2002 by Cal head football coach Jeff Tedford who was scouting Rodgers' Butte teammate, tight end Garrett Cross. Like Goff, Rodgers opted out of his senior season at Cal and entered the 2005 NFL Draft where he was selected 24th overall in the first round by Green Bay. Rodgers was the MVP of Super Bowl XLV, and as been selected nine times to the Pro Bowl. The Packers will now host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 24 at 12:05 p.m. PT on FOX.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Giants announced that they have signed left-handed pitcher Alex Wood to a one-year Major League contract for the 2021 season worth $3 million.
Wood can make an additional $3 million in performance bonuses for games pitched in which he records ten outs or greater: $125,000 each for 12 and 14; $250,000 each for 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24; $500,000 each for 26, 28 and 30.
Wood, who just turned 30 years old this past Tuesday, pitched in the Dodgers’ title-clinching win in Game 6 of the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays this past season, entering the third inning and throwing two perfect innings with three strikeouts to help Los Angeles claim their first championship in 32 years. The left-hander went 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in nine games (two starts) for the Dodgers during the regular season, tossing 12.2-innings with 15 strikeouts.
A 2017 All-Star with the Dodgers, Wood has logged a career record of 53-44 with a 3.45 ERA in 188 games (138 starts) across eight big league seasons with Atlanta (2013-15), Los Angeles-NL (2015-18, 2020) and Cincinnati (2019).
With today’s addition of Wood, the Giants now have 40 players on their 40-man roster

SJSU Women's Basketball Cancels Remainder Of 2020-21 Season
|
|
San Jose State players huddle pregame versus the Cal Bears earlier this year.
|
|
San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball program will not play the remainder of the 2020-21 season due to health and safety concerns stemming from COVID-19.
"This was an incredibly tough decision, but one that is in the best interest of the health and safety for our program's student-athletes, coaches and staff," says Athletics Director Marie Tuite. "San Jose State will maintain its current schedule of competition in other sports while continuing to implement the athletics department's health and safety protocols. We look forward to watching the continued and exciting growth of our women's basketball program in the 2021-22 season."
Due to Santa Clara County guidelines regarding intercollegiate athletics, SJSU relocated its day-to-day operations to Phoenix, Arizona, on December 17, 2020.
Members of the women's basketball program will begin their mandatory 10-day quarantine, as outlined by Santa Clara County's travel directive, upon their return to San Jose. Individuals that are currently in quarantine or isolation will remain in Arizona. They will not return to San Jose until completion of the quarantine or isolation.
The Spartans have paused basketball activities twice since the start of the season due to COVID-19 issues within the program.
This decision does not affect other SJSU sports that are in season or are preparing for their season.

I, T. Buff, was rebuffed for providing incorrect information.
Last week I stated 10 Wild Card teams had won a Super Bowl. NO, 10 Wild Card teams played in a Super Bowl. Only six won. http://bit.ly/35Kkshe will take you to a page showing the results of those match-ups... A reward for my search of Wild Card teams revealed that my Pats were trounced by the Bears in 1985, a Wild Card team. This makes the loss more palatable...Onto this week's EASY question.
There were no fourth quarter comebacks in Wild Card weekend!
Of course there is a stat for quarterbacks with the most fourth quarter comebacks in the PLAYOFFS but which quarterback has the most fourth quarter comebacks in the playoffs ONLY?
(See answer below...)

Author Arif Khatib (above left)
As a person who has traveled the world and chronicled his journey, and recently completed his memoirs for his family, Arif Khatib set out to create a book that would combine three of his passions: sports, history and social justice, while shining a much-needed light on the contributions of forgotten and unheard-of athletes of color. The Shadow of Obscurity: Toiling in a Reluctant Society realizes his vision.
Author Pete Elman (above right)
Pete Elman is a musician, journalist, author and teacher. Originally from Washington, D.C., he grew up loving rock and roll, sports and history. His father, a Justice Department lawyer who argued cases in the Supreme Court—most notably Brown vs. Board of Education—imbued in young Peter a strong sense of social justice.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
